Google’s Mobile-Friendly Algorithm

Some facts

  • Google’s mobile-friendly algorithm is bigger than Panda &  Penguin
  • With up to 50% searches on Google done on mobile devices
  • Virtually all of that traffic from mobile is at risk if your sites don’t rank
  • That’s a lot of organic search dropping off after April 21, 2015

Are your own and your clients’ website ready to pass the Google Mobile-Friendly test or are you still struggling with sites not getting the ‘awesome’ stamp of approval?

Here are some reasons why your sites might not be considered Mobile-Friendly by Google:

Could be because …

  • Your sites use software that is not common on mobile devices.  Yes there are still Flash sites out there!
  • Your sites use text that users need to zoom in to read
  • Your sites don’t resize content forcing users to scroll horizontally or zoom in
  • Links are not far enough apart. Users struggle to tap them easily

3 Examples of What can go wrong

Image optimisation

Images often account for most of the requested data on a page. Thus optimizing images can often give some of the largest data savings and performance enhancements: the fewer kb the browser has to download, the less competition there is for the client’s bandwidth and the faster the browser can download and render content on the screen. Different size images may need to be delivered on the same page to different devices. This can be complicated and requires some testing to get it optimized correctly.

Enable compression

All modern browsers support and automatically negotiate gzip compression for all HTTP requests. Enabling gzip compression can reduce the size of the transferred response by up to 90%, which can significantly reduce the amount of time to download the resource, reduce data usage for the client, and improve the time to first render of your pages. Compression varies from server to server. Here experience goes a long way to finding the right solution without wasting money.

Minify JavaScript

Minification refers to the process of removing unnecessary or redundant data without affecting how the web page is processed by the browser – e.g. code comments and formatting, removing unused code, using shorter variable and function names, and so on. JavaScript is used regularly on most websites today and perform critical functions which enhance user experience. A very methodical process is required to minify and test scripts to ensure they function as they should no matter what device or connection the page is served on.
