Yeah Can gets to do Web Design for an Author

Thursday, May 17th, 2012

The Focused Organization

It’s not often that Team Yeah Can gets the opportunity to rub shoulders with serious thinkers and book authors. But we were lucky to be appointed to design Antonio Nieto-Rodriguez’ website showcasing his new book The Focused Organization.

It’s been interesting working with an author. Presented with the pre-designed cover of the book, we had red and black to work with. So the first decision was made with respect to promoting the author as well as the book and a personal logo for Antonio was developed.

Taking the initials of his name it was thought he might like to make a stamp out of his logo and use it to stamp books during book signing tours and other promotional activities. Even the idea of stickers to hand out to people appealed. Whether he has the time to use this fun PR tool only time will tell.

Antonio is a very busy person. Besides his high powered job at a bank in Belgium, he also lectures evening class to Business School students. A truly busy schedule. One wonders how he had time to write a book!

Taking his heavy schedule into consideration, it was decided that Yeah Can would write some of the copy to expedite the site design and build. Although the site is there to promote his book, it was also an opportunity not to be missed that would promote him as a person and start brand Antonio Nieto-Rodriguez.

Branding the author will be invaluable when he writes his next book. The branding exercise will build value in not just the new book but the author as well. Something to build on.

So who says Yeah Can only does Web Design?

Juani's Churros, Andalucia's finest Churros!

Err. We did. That was the plan. Let’s focus on something we are really good at. We said. Just focus on offering affordable but still totally professional web design. That’s what we had in mind. But then we know what happens to the best laid plans of mice and men. Yes we do. They often go awry. (thanks to Robbie Burns for those words of wisdom…)

Yeah Can has its first Spanish client. Not quite totally local in that client is in Granada, but close enough for Team Yeah Can to go and visit and make an acquintance face to face. That’s always great. Although of course, it takes up a lot of time which could have been spent in the studio. This was especially so because we got lost trying to find the offices.

Granada is trying to build a type of tram line system of public transport. They ran out of money. Aah oops. Now with some extra money from the EU they hope to finish. What it does to the road system is of course a nightmare to visitors. Although, speaking of which, when we went down a one-way road and hit a dead end, we were closely followed by a butcher delivery van and other lost souls.

One would imagine the meat wagon is local and on local deliveries. It seems that Granada moves the goal posts regularly so even Granadians (is that what they are called?) get lost. However, with our UK number plates people should always note. Don’t follow the tourists!

New client has an export agency. And he has persuaded a client of his who makes Churros, the Spanish national nibble which apparently gives donuts a run for its money, to exhibit at an Expo for Spanish Products. Which means that Team Yeah Can is now designing large posters for the walls. Mmh. Whatever happened to web design only.

Variety is the spice of life. Or in this instance Famous Andalucian Churros made by Juani’s Churros do the trick! It’s a family business and has been going since 1949. Great to see a business grow and flourish over such a long period of time. Not that they are stuck in the past century. They are offering gluten free product as well. Definitely moving with the times.

Trip to Granada past the glorious Sierra Nevada

Our trip to Granada was interesting too. Many flowering trees with new green leaves made the countryside even more lovely. The whole scenery framed to one side by an extensive snow cap on the Sierra Nevada mountains proof of a rather chilly April. Beautiful country, our new home of Spain.

All that’s left to do now is to learn Spanish. Not as easy as that might sound. But we’re working on it.

By the way, Yeah Can has a Facebook page now. Please visit and ‘Like’ us!

Yeah Can does web design in South Africa

LearnLikeLerato.co.za Website

Two weeks working in web design in Cape Town, South Africa? Yes please! Client Bubblegum called on Yeah Can to help restore order after a design

er left them to follow other dreams. A few days in Johannesburg working in the TV studio during the live broadcast of a brand new educational show were followed by ten days in glorious Cape Town.

Bubblegum offers a range of educational products besides a TV show. One of these products targets Grade 1, 2 and 3 kids attending school in South Africa. Bubblegum has produced a gloriously colourful and fun set of books, newspaper supplements and supporting posters in a number of the national languages to make learning fun and to give teachers extra classroom material.

South Africa boasts eleven official languages. It’s quite something to produce educational material in such a range of languages. On offer so far are educational resources in English, Zulu, Xhosa and Sesotho with more languages to follow.

The great thing about these resources is that they are produced by teachers working in classrooms with years of experience. This makes the material real and based on real life learner/educator interaction rather than on some nebulous theoretical academia. And it’s beautifully designed. A real pleasure to look at whether adult or kid.

In support of this wonderful program Yeah Can was briefed to add a website. Following on with the fun graphics used in the print material, the web design follows a similar look and feel. Check out the fabulous graphics for this amazing program. Don’t we all wish we had been at school then?

A new Website for Fundraising For Education

Picture of Website Design for Fundraising for Education

Fundraising for Education Website

One of the last projects Team Yeah Can worked on before leaving Vietnam to settle in Spain in November 2011 was the web design for the Fundraising for Education.site This is an initiative by Phoenix Education‘s Foundation which started its first Phoenix School in August 2011 based in Hue, Vietnam.

The site was designed and the copy written by Yeah Can. Added to this was an email campaign for the Christmas season. Although the site is a serious fund raising site, it was decided to tackle this important topic in a fun and light hearted way. The Team felt it was important to stay away from the kind of poverty images that have given fund raising a bad name. We should surely not have to have images of tearful, starving children to persuade people to support the school? So let’s see how that works for us.

So far the feed-back for the site has been encouraging and the comments on the design have been really good. There will be a more serious site going up which will be focused on the corporate fund raising side. That would be targeted at major donors and grant providers.

Great to be able to provide web design to a good cause. It’s Team Yeah Can’s second cause and will be the main one the team will support in 2012.

Web design for Clients from all corners of the World

Friday, November 4th, 2011

Yeah Can’s client base is growing and at the same time spreading across the globe. Soon the office will have to have a row of clocks so that we know when our various clients are up and ready to talk to us.

Currently we have one client here in Hue, although it’s actually an NGO from Norway, so not entirely local. Then we have several based in Australia and one in New Zealand.

We have just finished a site for a Montessori school based in Singapore. Finished a site for our favourite client in Hong Kong. Then the Netherlands client has just paid us our final bonus and we are doing work for two different clients in California one based in San Francisco and the other in LA.

And let’s not forget our clients in the UK. A Lottery site and a fun iPhone App with a website for a film production house starting soon.

So far we’ve been really lucky. They have been a bunch of super people who we have worked easily and built great relationships with. We’re hoping it’s not just the lucky house we are living and working in right now. We have a very lucky Vietnamese spirit looking after us.

Maybe we should take him with us when we move to Spain at the end of the month. He’s been very good to us has Tao Quan the Kitchen God. Little altar in the kitchen where we put some fruit and something to drink for him and light incense sticks. Every now and then when we remember we actually put some yellow flowers into the big cactus in its pot.

Our garden is all in pots. We only have paved areas. It means we are in a wealthy house. Grass around a house is for farmers. How points of view differ across the globe. A beautiful lawn in the UK or South Africa means wealth. Here not so much. Your wealth is reflected by the size of the plants in the huge clay containers.

In November we will be moving ourselves and the office to Spain. Wonder if we will have a bit of grass then!

Last design work with Hope Center

Friday, October 14th, 2011

Finger Puppets Designed by Kyra

Yeah Can’s time in Vietnam is drawing to a close. This also means that the volunteering work done at Hope Center will be coming to an end in a few week’s time. For a last project Yeah Can worked with the handicraft production artisans to create new products for a competition.

This is a competition for new handicraft product designs run by Hoi An city and it has inspired the Hope Center artisan team with a little help of Yeah Can’s designers to try their hand at making a toy. For tourists looking for something for their children or grandchildren there is not much available. At least there isn’t much that has a Vietnamese feel. Most toys don’t go past the cheap and nasty Chinese import type.

It was decided to try some finger puppets especially as Hope Center has rolls of suitable fabric in storage which meant no purchases had to be made. These five finger puppets are a Vietnamese family. There is grandad with white beard (and yes he does look a bit like the famous Uncle Ho Chi Min), Mom and Dad and their two kids a boy and girl. The five puppets combine the old fashioned or traditional part of Vietnam while at the same time they show off the funky look of the modern young people growing up in Vietnam right now.

Hopefully the Center can win this competition as it not only promises a nice cash prize but also could lead to a very nice order for handicraft products which the Hope Center can surely do with.

New web design work keeps Team Yeah Can very busy

Saturday, October 1st, 2011

It’s been a long time since the last update here and it’s due to the fact that Yeah Can is unbelievably busy. Which is all good. Most definitely all good. Here is a bit of a slide show of new work done.

It’s been mostly web design work and some logo design. We are really getting expert at Wordress sites. And those are good for our clients. It’s great that clients can update their own sites. Why have to go back to a web designer when all you want to do is change your phone number or address details? Never made sense. The good web designers don’t charge because they deliver their work with good ethics. But then you end up working for nothing. And that’s not good for the bank manager. Enter WordPress and that problem has been solved.

Evaluating your own site’s SEO Profile

Friday, September 16th, 2011

First, let’s just check what an SEO profile is about. An SEO profile for a website is just like a marketing plan or a business plan – basically, it’s a strategy document, putting your decisions into words.

Writing your SEO profile should consist of the following:

An introduction – This should include a BRIEF description of your company as well as a purpose statement of some kind. If you can describe your company in a neat, tight format, you will be one step ahead of most in the SEO game.

Goals relating to your Search Engine Status – What do you want your page rank to be? Where do you want to be listed under specific key words? top 50? 25? 10? How many pages of your site do you want search engines to index? Do you want to pay for listings? These questions will get you started, but you must go more in-depth into your SEO goals. Also include the search engines and directories that you feel are necessities such as Google, DMOZ, Yahoo!, and MSN.

Information regarding SEO actions and achievements – This one is pretty self-explanatory. List everything that you do regarding Search Engine Optimization as well as any successes caused by these actions.

Once you’ve written an SEO profile, you can compare it from time-to-time with what’s going on with your site, before either adjusting the site to reflect your strategy or adjusting the profile to reflect a strategy change. Generally, it is wise to stick to the plan, but occasions may arise when you find that this is simply not logical anymore. In these cases, you must re-evaluate your entire plan because one change can effect the rest of your strategy.

If you have an extremely intricate strategy that depends on one thing going well, you may want to diversify your strategy. Your profile should especially focus on special things you plan to do that aren’t standard SEO practice. Standard SEO work can get you only so far. Every one of your competitors is probably doing the same things so get creative. This is one place where doing something for yourself can really push you to the top. If you already have a high-ranking site, you should use your profile to document the reasons why it has happened, to help you maintain your high ranking.

Keeping your SEO profile updated will allow you to stay current not only on what’s going on with your website, but also on what’s going on in the SEO industry. The SEO industry is very fickle. It can change suddenly without warning to reflect what a search engine or directory believes to be the opinion or benefit of the market. Remember that search engines are always in competition with one another to deliver the most results of the highest quality. If you stay on top of your quality, changes in the SEO industry will have minimal effect on you. It is still important to track these changes in order to ensure that your site gets maximum exposure.

Evaluating your website and profile regularly give you an advantage in the market – you should never let a profile get older than 3 months, and you should refer to it and update it every time you make major changes to your site. These changes include additions of services or removal of services as well as design changes and SEO work.

There is software available online that can help you evaluate your site’s SEO profile. Some of these software apps are very useful, others are very overrated. The difference that these programs will make in your fight for page rank and listings depends on your interpretation of the results nearly as much as it depends on the value of the software itself.

5 Specialists who can help you with your web site

Monday, August 29th, 2011

Any entrepreneur starting out will know that choosing a web designer is a very important decision. A good website can bring business and a bad one can certainly frighten off customers.

Here are some specialists you might want to work with:

1) A Website Designer will help you with the layout of your site, prepare graphics, place text and decide on the colours of your site. A designer will help with navigation and linking pages. If you are lucky your designer might be able to do some coding and draw your graphics from scratch. If not they will be able to assist with finding a specialist. In the end your web designer could also work as your project manager.

2) Website Programmer works with the designer and creates the code to ensure the site works smoothly. The programmer is also responsible for all the technical stuff that works invisibly in the background. That means no broken links or slow loading site to mention just a few of the things that need to be checked.

3) A graphic designer creates all the creative content for the site. Will also often be involved in the page layout, choice of colours and more. This is the person who is the visual artist for your website.

4) A copy writer is a requirement if you don’t have anybody on your staff who can write content for your site. It’s also often a time issue. Nobody has the time to sit down to write the copy for your site. In this instance a copy writer might need to be called in. Writing the copy for your site is time consuming.

5)The Internet Marketing Consultant will assist with working with you to ensure your site contributes to your overall marketing strategy of your product or service range. This person will also help you with traffic to your site and optimising your sales pages for you.

Sometimes you might get lucky and find one person who can fulfil all of your requirements for your site. But that’s quite rare. It also depends on the complexity of your site. An ordinary brochure style site will usually only require the work of a web designer. A full on ecommerce site might need a programmer.

If your site needs many illustrations you might want to get a graphic designer involved. And in many instances your web designer has a fair amount of knowledge with respect to keywords and search engine optimisation techniques and you might not need an Internet Marketing Consultant.

Whatever your needs you might want to shop around to find the best web designer for your purposes.

New web design project for Friends of Hue Foundation

Friday, August 26th, 2011

There are many great INGOs operating in Vietnam. This one is in Hue and supported well by American Vietnamese living in California. FHF looks after health, orphaned and needy kids and micro finances small enterprises. And they needed a new website design.

Yeah Can decided to truly give images the exposure they deserve when designing this new web site. Especially photos of Vietnamese children, who must be amongst the cutest kids world wide, make for great images.

Have a look at these images of the new look web site. Isn’t it amazing? Visit the site to see how beautiful these images are and how powerful the site is to show people what this amazing organisation is doing for the people of Hue.

Well done Friends of Hue Foundation and all its wonderful staff and volunteers who work there to make the lives of people in Hue so much easier.
